UMOU KOROWAI – GRACE MANN DESIGNS

WINNER, Asia Pasifika section Style Pasifika Fashion Awards 2006.

Overall Runner-up & Highly Commended

This Garment Umou Korowai was created by twin sisters Karen and Alison Reid, who named their fashion label after their late Grandma, Grace Mann.
Umou Korowai was constructed from over 1000 white chicken feathers, silk and harakeke (flax weaving). It represents the migration of people – resulting in a fusion of a Maori Cloak (Korowai) and a Japanese Kimono. Umou means feathers in Japanese.
The winning garment was then modelled in the Grand Opening of Auckland’s Vector Arena Stadium in 2007.

The Apprentice NZ Reality Television Series – 2010

Karen was chosen from over 2000 applicants nationwide to be a contestant on the reality TV series based on Donald Trump’s hugely successful American programme – The Apprentice. Donald Trump was replaced by NZ’s own millionaire, Terry Serepisos, who was looking for a right hand ‘man’ to help him in his empire – Century City. Karen made it to the Final four before she was reluctantly fired and sent home. She holds the top record of being a winning Project Manager 3 times! She won several major prizes and experienced amazing new novelties like being flown by helicopter to a luxury yacht on the ocean for lunch, sharing a box seat with contestants and Mr Serepisos at the Ellerslie Races, working with our very own All Black rugby players Ali Williams & Ritchie McCaw, working with the Phoenix Football players at the final Charity Auction, and watching a Phoenix football match from the luxury of Mr Serepisos’ Box at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium!
